The diversity of the Washington Supreme Court

Even though this article is from July 2020, I just ran across it for the first time and I thought it merited a blog post. It features (among others) the two newest justices of the Washington Supreme Court—Justice Raquel Montoya-Lewis (who is the first Native American on the court) and Justice G. Helen Whitener (who is the first black woman on the court).

The article specifically addresses judicial diversity, holding Washington’s court up as a model. Our court has seven women, four justices of color, two openly LGBTQ justices, one immigrant and disabled justice, and one straight white man. The Chief Justice is Latino. It’s really quite amazing.

I’ve discussed on Twitter before about the Washington Supreme Court’s diversity and how it’s a court to be proud of. This article is further proof that others around the country are taking note.
